Kenya's primary coffee varieties include SL28 and SL34, which were developed and named by Scott Laboratories in 1930. SL28 boasts a diverse lineage influenced by French missionaries, Mocha, and Yemen Tibika. Initially cultivated to yield a high volume of disease-resistant, high-quality beans, SL28 fell short of expectations in production but gained recognition for its copper leaf color and bean-like shape, offering notable sweetness, balance, complexity, and distinctive citrus and black plum notes. Similarly, SL34 shares resemblances with SL28 but exhibits a heavier, denser, and cleaner taste profile, characterized by complex acidity and a lingering sweet finish. SL34's lineage includes influences from French missionaries, Bourbon, and additional Tebika strains. While visually similar to SL28, SL34 demonstrates superior adaptability to sudden heavy rainfall. These two prominent varieties play a pivotal role in defining the distinctive qualities of Kenyan coffee beans.

The name, Handege, is derived from Ndege, the Swahili word for airplane.
